From the Therapy Cabinet – Part One: The Art Basket
Every object in a therapy room has a purpose.
Some are obvious.
Some are waiting until the right moment.
This basket of art materials is one of those therapeutic companions.
People often tell me, "I'm not artistic." or, "I don't know what to draw."
The beautiful thing is ... you don't have to.
In therapy, art is not about creating something beautiful.
It is about giving shape to something that can feel difficult to put into words.
Sometimes a splash of colour says more than a sentence.
Sometimes drawing helps us slow down.
Sometimes creating together makes emotions feel a little safer to approach.
Children often reach for these materials naturally.
Adults are sometimes more hesitant.
Yet time and again, I have seen how simple scribbles on paper can open conversations that words alone could not.
This little basket reminds me that healing does not always begin with talking. Sometimes, it begins with creating.
What would you be tempted to pick up first ... paint, pencils, or markers?
